BACKSTORY
If there's any job outside of the octagon that benefits the long game, it's practicing law. As a bar-certified attorney, Hunter is as litigious as they come, a trait that goes hand-in-hand with his fighting style. It's not about grandstanding and shit-talking and bombastic behavior, it's about sticking to 'the facts' - leveraging his skills against his opponent's, isolating any given weakness, and taking the 'thinking man's path to victory. What his bouts lack in flash, he tries to make up for in substance; catching the most effective throw, pressing the ground game, staking claim on a hold and, if they don't tap, chipping away each round on points and control. Outside the octagon, Hunter generally subscribes to speaking softly and carrying a big stick; he's not loud and he's not abrasive, and seeks to conduct himself as professionally and politely as he can.
Hunter is from a powerful family of lawyers and conservative lobbyists on Washington DC's Beltway, having come up with the proverbial silver spoon firmly in his mouth. A silver spoon he spat out an early age, however, rejecting the clean-cut and proper image his family enforced for loud, outspoken rebellion. For as long as he can remember, Hunter was fighting; whether it was his older brother, his father, or any given figure of authority, it took a lot of hard lessons to 'outgrow' this disobedience.
What saved him wasn't a change of heart, but his high school's wrestling program. Hunter found a new passion in folkstyle wrestling, and discipline came along with it. Hunter won three DC Interscholastic Athletic Association championships, and made individual and team records that still stand. While Yale was the Ivy League right of passage for the Montgomery family, Hunter balked at attending any school without a wrestling program; he instead attended the American University in Washington DC, and found success as an Eagle, earning All-American honors and becoming a two-time EIWA Champion. Hunter started creating a great deal of buzz on the NCAA Division 1 wrestling scene, and with talents in freestyle as well as Greco-Roman wrestling, earned the attention of Team USA Olympic scouts.
Outside of athletics, however, Hunter found that he could direct his passion for outspoken advocacy in a way his family couldn't possibly veto - going into the family business of law. After graduating, Hunter attended American University's Washington College of Law - though he was in contention to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics, he withdrew himself from consideration to continue with his studies and earn his law degree. While Hunter has practiced law ever since, the itch of 'what could have been' has yet to be scratched. In the Fall of 2019, he resigned as an associate from the law firm, and dedicated himself to practicing wrestling and mixed martial arts.
