EVEREST // CITY OF ANGELS

ROUND ONE: Both men touch gloves to open the fight, and it's immediately clear that Silvio Gotti Jr knows he needs a finish to reach the championship final--he’s on the offensive from the start. Immediately, he shoots for a takedown and rag-dolls Garret to the mat, ending up taking his back and almost securing a Rear Naked Choke within the first few seconds of the fight! Garfield is able to defend the choke and, eventually, scramble back to his feet, but Gotti doesn’t slow down. He presses forward, feigning jabs until he could secure a clinch--and then trips the Big Cat to the mat again! Garret throws a few ineffective punches from the bottom, but Gotti blocks the impact easily. Unfortunately for Gotti, the fight stalls out, and both men get stood up. Garfield throws a body kick, but Gotti deflects and tries a high kick as a counter; Garret is too close, and while Gotti’s kick makes contact, there’s not as much power behind it as Silvio might have wanted, and Garfield is able to press forward--although Gotti manages to secure a clinch again. Both men pommel for position, resulting in a scramble that eventually ends up on the mat, with Gotti on top in side control! Garfield scrambles to get away, but Gotti takes his back once again--and this time, when he wraps up a Rear Naked Choke, there’s nowhere for Garfield to go.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: Impressive display of ground control by Gotti, and a much needed early finish over a game but seemingly outmatched Garfield Garret. The finish secures Gotti’s spot in the final, but he’ll have his eye on the main event to see who he’ll be facing.

What It Means: 6 points and a statement win to end his round robin, Silvio Gotti Jr. punches his ticket to San Francisco and the Welterweight Championship fight. Garfield ends his round robin at 0-3, but he showed flashes of brilliance across the three fights.

What’s Next: Silvio Gotti Jr. faces either Derrius Webb or D’Ante Jackson for the Welterweight Championship.

ROUND ONE: From the touch of the gloves, Parsons is on the attack--she wings a big right hand that Marshall’s able to avoid, then follows it up with a series of straight punches that she can’t. On the break, Marshall’s already bleeding, and Parsons seems to, if you’ll forgive the indulgence, smell blood in the water. She ties up Marshall in a clinch, and absolutely UNLOADS with knees to the body and head, alternating shots until Marshall starts to shrug out of the clinch. Parsons lands a couple more digging body blows, this time powerful hooks that stagger Victoria, before the Twin Cities prospect puts a stamp on the fight with a couple power punches that drop Victoria.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: Good...ness. There’s not much to say about this one, except that loss to Elliot back in Portland must have done more to Rachel Parsons than I thought. Belinskaya in 2 minutes, now Marshall in 1. What a performance.

What It Means: All Rachel Parsons had to do was win. She certainly did THAT. 6 points means the fight between Elliot and Katya later in the evening is a moot point--the Strawweight Title fight is already secured. Victoria ends her run at 0-2-1, but a young prospect like this will come back better in the future.

What’s Next: Rachel Parsons faces Elliot McMillan for the Strawweight Championship.

ROUND ONE: There is absolutely no feeling out process in this fight--the two touch gloves, then Harris shoots for a takedown almost immediately. Silva resists, but eventually gets taken down, albeit only as far as his guard. He manages to crawl back to the cage and tries to get back up, but Harris keeps him on the mat; Harris, in turn, tries to force her way thru to side-mount, but only gets as far as half-guard. She seems to resign herself to that position, and just starts slamming elbows down. Silva gets his guard up, but turns his attention away from Harris’s position, and she passes first to side-mount, then to full mount! Silva tries to scramble free, but Harris shuts him down with a massive elbow that visibly rocks him. Silva struggles for position, but Harris kept her mount secured, until Silva tries to roll and she takes his back instead! Cat lands a couple punches from the back, but Silva manages to tie her arm up and stall the fight out, until it gets stood up. Harris comes out swinging on the restart, clipping Silva with some big punches in a wild exchange! Harris tags Silva with a leg kick, and when he comes back with a couple jabs to get in close, Harris wings a big looping hook that clips and drops Silva! Just like that, it’s over!

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: The stoppage seemed...really abrupt to me; maybe the ref saw something I didn’t. Yeah, Silva got hit by that big punch, but he just looked dazed to me, not out. But I watch the fights from cageside, I don’t get in the cage. Either way, Cat looks like she’s on a war-path to the Featherweight Championship, but not without cracks in her armor. She’ll have to tighten up that ground control if she sees CC Flynn in the title fight.

What It Means: Harris’s spot in the Featherweight Championship fight was already secured back in Seattle, but another win--and a first round finish, this time--won’t hurt her confidence. Silva finishes the round robin 0-3, but I think we saw glimpses of who he could be in the future. Hopefully we get that chance.

What’s Next: Catherine Harris faces either CC Flynn or Kenneth Rodriguez for the Featherweight Championship.

ROUND ONE: For the first time tonight, there’s no glove touch to start the round; Rodriguez opens with a huge straight left that Flynn ducks underneath and circles away from, but Rodriguez doesn’t bother chasing Flynn down--rather, he takes the center of the cage, and when she moves in, he flicks out a few quick punches, although she’s just as quick to back up before they hit. Rodriguez shakes his head, almost seeming to beckon CC in, but she just circles around him, looking for an opening. Rodriguez opts to try to make his own, throwing a quick kick to the ribs that CC’s able to get her guard down to prevent, then a follow up hook that just misses. Flynn finally engages, throwing a somewhat poor leg kick that Rodriguez checks with ease--she does follow up with a nice one-two though, but the finishing kick is pretty easily telegraphed, and Rodriguez checks it with ease. Rodriguez’s counter punch is deflected, and he seems to get a little agitated by CC’s relative inactivity--he starts throwing just wild punches for a seconds, though CC’s quick to reply back and gets the better of the exchange before circling away from him again. CC starts to engage a little more, bit every time she moves in, Rodriguez throws a low kick--eventually, she just takes one, and presses forward, landing a nice quick combination that draws Kenneth’s guard up. He’s able to make space and throws a kick to keep Flynn at bay, but Flynn avoids the shot and lands a big counter hook! The last minute of the round is some of the most undisciplined but entertaining striking exchanges I’ve ever seen--both fighters throw wildly, both miss more than they hit, but Flynn starts to get the better of the exchanges just before the end of the round; Rodriguez, right on the sound of the clapper, throws a big head kick, but loses his balance in the process, and ends up on the mat. Neither land anything from there, and the round ends.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Flynn -- Ugly round, kinda boring at times, but Flynn was definitely better there. Not much else to say. Hopefully the action picks up after the way the round ended.

ROUND TWO: CC starts the round...similar to how she did round 1, by circling around Rodriguez early on, although she’s more willing to engage at least--she throws a couple jabs and a big hook early on, though Rodriguez is able to deflect every punch and keep CC moving. He responds with a one-two of his own, then a spinning backfist that Flynn’s able to duck and counter with a big power shot of her own! Her follow up punch misses wildly though, but she’s able to keep Kenneth from capitalizing on the counter. Rodriguez goes back to the leg kicks when CC tries to engage, wanting the fight on his terms--so she obliges, by just circling around him again. Whether it’s deliberate or not, it seems to be effecting Rodriguez--he, again, goads her into engaging...which may not have been his best idea, as she lands a stinging straight punch, right thru the guard! Rodriguez throws a low kick that just misses, but Flynn’s follow up doesn’t connect either; both throw a few quick but wild punches, but they both miss just as wildly until Flynn comes back with a stinging hook! Rodriguez once again keeps her at bay with a leg kick, but now it’s him that’s on the bicycle, circling around Flynn and feigning punches to try to get her attention. Ironically, Flynn uses Rodriguez’s tactic against him--when he starts to come in, she throws a leg kick that he’s comfortably able to check--but eats a straight shot to the sternum in the process. Both fighters throw huge shots toward the end of the round, but nothing really significant lands before the horn sounds.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Flynn (20-18 Flynn) -- I’m not entirely sure what CC’s gameplan is here, cuz it seems to just be circle the cage until Kenneth throws something...and while she’s not doing badly when she does engage, I just feel like it only takes one mistake with that plan for it to go south. Nonetheless, she landed more than Kenneth did, so I’ll give her the round, and again hope the action picks up in round 3.

ROUND THREE: Rodriguez opens by jabbing his way in range, then throwing a nice leg kick that CC’s able to just about check. He starts to throw a quick one-two, but CC uncorks one of her own that forces Kenneth’s guard up, rather than giving him time to throw. CC circles away from Kenneth again, feigning a punch just to get his reaction--which is a high kick thrown, and narrowly missing. Almost as soon as Rodriguez is back to facing her, though, he almost gets blasted with a straight right hand! It only just falls short, and Kenneth changes things up, trying to tie up CC’s arm in a clinch; CC pulls her arm back quickly and takes a couple steps back, this time goading Kenneth on. He throws a straight backfist to the body that just misses, before starting to follow CC’s movement, looking for an angle of attack...but every punch he throws, CC bobs, weaves, and ducks back, until finally Rodriguez abandons discipline again and just starts winging punches. CC’s happy to involve herself in the exchange, and ends up getting the better of the punches, backing Rodriguez up a step or two. Rodriguez re-engages and throws a few jabs that force CC to move, and when she engages she misses wildly, though throwing with power like she wants the finish now. Rodriguez steps in for an uppercut, but gets blasted with a big right hand! She follows up with an uppercut that lands solidly and opens a small cut on Rodriguez’s cheek, but it doesn’t do much more than that as he’s able to circle away--then re-engage, quickly, closing the distance with a series of jabs. Flynn counters with a couple straight punches of her own that connect, then a leg kick that gets checked right on the horn that ends the fight.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Flynn (30-27 Flynn) -- I guess it worked? Whatever the gameplan was, she got Kenneth throwing wildly and took advantage of it. I’d be surprised if the scores were anything other than 30-27.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: I really don’t know who’s keeping stats for these fights at this point. I find it hard to believe Rodriguez landed absolutely nothing. I watched the fight, I’m sure some of those wild exchanges had something hit, but...not according to the stats guy. Sure, I guess. Overall? While the crazier exchanges were entertaining, this wasn’t the best fight ever.

What It Means: All CC Flynn needed to move on to the title fight was a win, of any kind, and she got it; 2-1, with 6 points, means she’s advanced to the final, although I’m not sure how happy she’ll be going three rounds with someone who the stat guys say literally never touched her. A win is a win, though, right? Kenneth finishes the round robin 1-2, and while tonight wasn’t his best night, if he tightens up his technique, I think he could be impressive in the future.

What’s Next: CC Flynn faces Catherine Harris for the Featherweight Championship.

ROUND ONE: Caden starts the fight hot, with a straight right that catches Loktev by surprise, then a digging body shot. Loktev circles out, but it’s Caden who takes a step back, leading Loktev to seem to beckon him on. When Caden doesn’t bite, Loktev flicks out some tentative jabs, but nothing connects with any steam. Caden swings a looping right hand, but misses wildly and eats a couple jabs from Loktev in response--but he tries again almost immediately, a big right hand missing just narrowly. Caden seems to be looking for the big finish early on, but Loktev is able to avoid the big shots--however, Caden’s able to force his way in and ties Loktev up in a Thai Plum! He tightens his grip down before slamming punches into Loktev’s ribs. Loktev tries to respond in kind, but Caden’s able to deflect the impact. Loktev manages to pommel for control of one Caden’s arms, but the fight stalls out and the clinch is broken. Loktev takes the center of the cage, while Caden spends several seconds circling around him, pawing with a jab before pressing forward and managing to grab another clinch! This time, just a single collar, but he’s able to land a couple unanswered uppercuts that wobble Loktev’s knees! Loktev gets his guard up and deflects the incoming punches, and eventually the clinch stalls out again and the fight is restarted. Caden digs a few body shots that land before tying Loktev up in another clinch, before unloading with big hooks and body blows! Loktev locks Caden down and cools the fight down, before managing to push him away and get the fight back at distance. The first round seems to have wore on both men, as Caden swings a big punch that misses wildly, but Loktev throws a lazy kick that misses just as bad--Caden’s able to step in and land a MASSIVE uppercut in response to the kick, though, and it’s a small miracle Loktev is still on his feet! The Russian shakes the cobwebs free and comes back with thunderous punches, but Caden’s able to absorb them and land a nice one-two combo in response just before the horn sounds to end the round.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Theirin -- He kept control with the clinches, and landed the bigger shots. It’s not just a major hill for Sergey to climb, though, if he gets more crisp with his boxing this fight can be turned on its head in a hurry.

ROUND TWO: Caden lands a big straight right to start the round, the wings a massive left hook that stumbles Sergey back! One more big punch sends him to the round, and the fight is waved off!

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: Or...not. I guess Caden took offense to the first round actually managing to finish, good grief. Not much to break down about round 2, a couple big punches dropped Sergey and finished the fight. If he tightens up his defense, I think he’ll be fine, but a solid performance by Caden sees him comfortably into the Heavyweight Championship fight.

What It Means: Win and you’re in--Caden got the win, decisively. He eliminates Sergey Loktev and books a fight with the Heavyweight Champion, Dax Levandrier. Loktev finishes the round robin 1-2, but it’s not for a want of effort on his part.

What’s Next: Caden Theirin faces Dax Levandrier for the Heavyweight Championship.

ROUND ONE: Both fighters touch gloves, and Elliot opens the fight by winging a big hook to the body that Katya’s able to side-step. Elliot doesn’t give her a moment to try to find a counter, though, tagging her with a stinging low kick that lands with a thud. Katya circles the Strawweight Champion, as if to tell him the kick didn’t hurt--and eats a body kick in the process! She grits her teeth and avoids the incoming body shot from Elliot, countering with a high kick that just misses! Elliot engages with a flurry of punches, but Katya’s able to block or avoid them and circle away; the Russian engages on the counter, flicking out a solid one-two combo that Elliot’s just able to get his hands up to deflect. The counter-for-counter turns into a wild exchange that sees both fighters land, but nothing connects with major impact. Elliot takes a step back, before coming back in with a Superman Punch that lands directly on Katya’s nose. She shakes the impact off, but eats a couple more punches in the process, finally circling away. Elliot throws some tentative jabs, but Katya’s not in range, so instead he just rushes her down--and misses, wildly, when she circles away and tags him with a couple quick jabs. Knowing she’s in range, Elliot spins around with a spinning backfist--that lands FLUSH on Katya’s chin! How she’s still upright is a mystery, but she is--albeit, stumbling backward. Elliot marches her down, backing her against the cage before unloading a series of punches, to the body and head, that eventually force the official to wave the fight off!

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: Elliot doing what Elliot does. Much more aggressive than he was against Victoria Marshall back in Seattle, possibly because last time these two fought, he ate some big punches before getting the win. He landed big shots, and he didn’t give Katya much of a chance on the counter. Katya had moments, she caught Elliot on the counter a couple times, but it felt like Elliot was intent on sending a message to Rachel Parsons ahead of their rematch.

What It Means: Elliot learned his opponent for San Francisco with certainty earlier, but he won’t complain about a nearly perfect run through the round robin. Katya finishes 0-2-1, but we saw her put both Parsons and Elliot in trouble in the past. It may not be long before she evolves into a threat at 115.

What’s Next: Elliot Marshall faces Rachel Parsons for the Strawweight Championship.

ROUND ONE: Both men touch gloves, then it’s off to the races! Mack throws some HUGE shots early on that connect on the Heavyweight Champion, but once the Champ starts to engage back, he gets the better of a wild exchange of winging power punches! Mack lands a series of straights that back Dax up, but as Mack comes in to continue the flurry, he gets stopped in his tracks by an absolutely MASSIVE right hook that opens up a cut on his forehead! Mack’s undeterred, and spins around with a spinning backfist that lands on Dax’s chin! Mack follows up with a Superman Punch, but misses and gets countered by a huge straight right hand that visibly rocks Mack. Dax follows up with a big hook, but Mack isn’t going away, and the two start trading big shots again! Both men land with big power, and it’s only by the grace of whatever god they believe in that one hasn’t gone down! On the separation, Mack’s cheek is swelling up, and there’s blood dripping down his face. The pace finally slows down for a moment, Dax gauging his distance with a jab, but Mack presses forward, spinning around for another backfist--but Dax was aware this time, and deflects the punch with ease. Mack still moves in, winging a looping right hand, but he misses and eats a three punch combo. It doesn’t put Mack down, though, so he’s still moving in, throwing a barrage of punches that mostly go wide as Dax circles away--and, eventually, lands a huge right hand that catches Mack by surprise! The fight is stopped abruptly, and Dax is sent to a neutral corner, as the doctor is called in to look at the damage to Mack’s face--and when it’s obvious he can’t see out of his right eye, the fight is waved off!

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: Can we take a moment to give Mack Sharpe credit here? He got hit with some BOMBS from Dax, and just said “yanno what, I’m winning this fight or I’m gonna die trying.” You gotta be worried for his health, though, that eye swelled up fast, and he took a lot of damage to the head. Credit to Dax for a great fight, he looked as crisp as we’ve ever seen him, and he’ll be happy to finish his round robin with another solid win.

What It Means: Already advanced to San Francisco, the Heavyweight Champ finishes with 3 wins and 15 points, and momentum well and truly on his side. Mack Sharpe, bless him, finishes 0-3, but god were all those fights entertaining. Keep doing you, Mack, and hopefully we see you again soon.

What’s Next: Dax Levandrier faces Caden Theirin for the Heavyweight Championship.

ROUND ONE: Both men touch gloves, and that’s about the extent of the feeling out process; Webb opens the fight by feigning a shot, then launching a huge uppercut that Jackson’s just able to deflect, but the miss doesn’t deter him as he wings a massive hook that Jackson’s able to avoid. Jackson drops levels to shoot, but abandons the attempt when Webb throws a knee that might’ve turned his lights out early. However, with Webb off balance, Jackson re-engages, and grabs hold of a single leg takedown. Webb’s able to stay on his feet and circles away from Jackson. It’s not long before Jackson’s right back in his face, though, and both men start throwing wild punches; both land, but Jackson gets the best of the exchange, and backs Webb up with a few shots. Webb counters with a series of straight shots, but Jackson covers up and deflects the impact. Webb throws a big hook that Jackson’s able to parry and counter with a THUNDEROUS uppercut, but his follow up strikes are blocked by Webb, who circles away while flicking out a series of jabs--and, in the process, seems to graze Jackson’s eye! Cody Grant doesn’t seem to be aware of the foul, though, and the fight continues. Jackson shoots for another takedown, more out of desperation to buy himself some time--but it works, and he’s able to pass straight to side mount! Both men jockey for position on the ground, with Webb eventually managing to gain half-guard back, but in the process of trying to make space, he again pokes Jackson in the eye--and this time, Cody DOES see the foul! No point is taken, but Webb is warned one could be next time--and despite the beneficial position for Jackson, the fight is restarted standing. Webb’s punches are more tentative now, after the official’s warning, and he doesn’t make much contact with anything he throws early on; Jackson, meanwhile, is much more wild with his punches, and though he lands a couple, nothing connects solidly. In fact, it’s one of these wild punches that gives Webb his best opening--Jackson misses terribly with a haymaker, and gets clocked with a massive right hand right on the chin! Jackson’s wobbled, but not dropped, and Webb is on the aggressive now--a stinging inside leg kick lands, then a quick three punch combo that leaves Jackson’s face bruised up. Jackson circles away from the punches, but Webb walks him down and lands another couple shots, just before the horn to end the round.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Webb -- Not the prettiest first round, especially with the couple of eye pokes from Webb early on. But with no point taken, and mostly avoiding damage, I’ll say Webb took the round.

ROUND TWO: There’s no glove touch for round two; Jackson opens with a huge body shot that Webb’s able to block before countering with a big hook to the ribs of his own! Webb circles around Jackson, stinging him with quick leg kicks, then once Jackson’s looking low, he throws a huge high kick that only JUST misses the target...but the momentum spins him around, and he throws another one! This one lands with a thud, and Jackson’s visibly wobbled! A couple big hooks from Webb open a cut below Jackson’s left eye on the follow up, which puts Jackson on his bicycle--but Webb follows him, and when Jackson makes one wrong move, he’s slammed with another huge kick to the head! Webb wastes no time, throwing huge, wild punches that Jackson’s not quite covering...and eventually, Webb lands one that drops Jackson, HARD, and Cody Grant rushes in to wave the fight off!

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: An ugly first round turned into a dominant second. Derrius Webb came in to make a statement tonight, and he certainly did that. Let’s not discount D’Ante, either--while he was beaten tonight, he definitely had his moments, and I don’t think there’s any reason to think he’s not one of the Welterweight division’s best. Tonight just wasn’t his night.

What It Means: D’Ante Jackson controlled his own fate in the Welterweight Standings...until Derrius Webb ripped control away from him. A 2-1 record and 11 points means Derrius finishes top of the 170 lb standings, and eliminates Jackson from the tournament. 2-1 as well, but with only 8 points, Jackson’s run comes to an end and he’ll watch the final from the outside, but I don’t think this is the last we see of him.

What’s Next: Derrius Webb faces Silvio Gotti Jr. for the Welterweight Championship.
