EVEREST // LA

The prelims begin with a heavyweight contest between ScrapYard’s Caden Theirin, who is fresh off a big debut win, and Yoshida Sanzo, who’s still searching for his first victory in Everest. Theirin showcased a fast pace throughout this fight, which gave Sanzo a lot of trouble. The Silver Knight kept quick on his feet, sticking and moving, while also keeping his head on a swivel to dodge any offense thrown his way. Theirin also worked well in the clinch, using the closed distance to work the body. Sanzo was dropped several times by big hooks, but the referee gave him every chance to fight back. By the third round, Sanzo was a bloody mess and after eating a nasty flurry inside the clinch, the referee finally stepped in and put a stop to the onslaught.

The second bout in the prelims featured a Welterweight bout between 9th World’s D’Ante Jackson and 36th Street’s Royal Holt—two fighters looking to rebound from losses. Holt started the fight off with a spinning back fist that surprised Jackson and rocked him. Jackson threw a head kick that missed, but gave him some space to recover. The two closed the distance and Jackson connected with a single leg takedown to bring the fight to the mat. Jackson kept the pressure on, working the body with rapid punches until Holt nearly caught him in a kimura from the bottom. Jackson circled out to free himself and got to half guard. It was downhill from here for Holt, as Jackson rocked him with a series of elbows to the head. Jackson could sense that Holt was hurt, and finished it off with a flurry of punches that caused the referee to step in and end this fight inside the first frame.

The final fight in the prelims block was one the spectators were eager to see. 9th World’s CC Flynn has been a vocal self-promoter since making her pro debut and has targeted the younger Lyons sister early on. The first round was a very slow and methodical feeling out process as neither fighter really took the initiative to unload any serious offense. Maliyah Lyons had a couple of takedowns stuffed which forced her to eventually pull guard. Flynn was able to hold her own on the ground, avoiding any troubling situations and without taking any major damage. The second round continued with a slow, measured tempo. Despite the hype leading up to this fight, these two respected each other’s game. Flynn worked in the clinch and dropped Lyons with an uppercut. Maliyah fought off her back until the ref stood her back up, and from there another takedown attempt from Maliyah was stuffed, causing her to pull guard once again. Flynn continued to control the tempo, and surprisingly took Lyons’ back and got two hooks in. Flynn tagged Maliyah a few good times before the end of the round. The final round saw CC fire out of the gate landing big combos which caused Maliyah to go for another takedown. Once again it was stuffed. CC stayed patient and landed a hook that dropped Lyons. Lyons defended herself on her back with up-kicks until the referee stood her back up. For the remainder of the round, CC put on a clinic by picking her opponent apart with well timed jabs and safely securing a big win for her infant career.

Before the main card fights began, Union GP President Dante Reed stepped into the octagon to make an announcement. He tweeted out earlier about big news for Everest MMA, and he revealed that after tonight, eMMA would be shifting to a new seasonal playoff-style format. Dante spoke about how Everest will go through a regular season round robin for every division, which will then determine a playoff seeding. The ultimate victor will be crowned champion and receive a guaranteed offer to Union GP. He thanked the fans and fighters for the early successes of Everest before signing off.

Kicking off the main card action, we have two promising behemoths square off in a Heavyweight Bout. RAW Graps prospect Dax Levandrier looks to continue his winning ways while Mack Sharpe looks to rebound from a tough loss. Sharpe tried to catch Dax off guard with a double leg out of the gate, but Dax sprawled back and worked into a clinch. Just as quickly as Dax got in a clinch, he broke out from it and clipped Sharpe with a brutal right hook that filleted Sharpe’s eyebrow. The fight was quickly stopped as Sharpe was losing a lot of blood. The doctor came in to inspect it, and despite Sharpe’s plea saying he’s perfectly fine to continue, the medical examiner decided to stop it. The crowd and both fighters were extremely displeased with the decision, and wasn’t the best of ways to start the main card off.

After a rough start that ended prematurely from a doctor stoppage, the rest of the night looks solid as we head into championship bouts from here on out. The first title bout is for the newly vacated Featherweight Championship, as The Lair’s Fran von Licht takes on RAW Graps’ Bevin Gordon-Starr. Both of these prospects have been impressive in their short, but exciting Everest runs, and have a chance to reach a big pinnacle in their young careers. Fran von Licht came out firing on all cylinders with a ton of action with short burst combos that kept BGS at a complete disadvantage. Fran never let the foot off the gas as she relentlessly pummeled her way to a first round TKO stoppage to secure the Championship.

Up next the Strawweight Championship is on the line as the soaring ScrapYard MMA prospect Elliot McMillan defends his title against Throne MMA prospect Syn Saetang. During the lead up to this fight, we saw a rare civility from McMillan towards Saetang, which led many to believe he was aware of the task at hand. The fight started out a little rocky for Saetang as she ate some big punches from McMillan. After a little while, she was able to settle down and work in some offense to level the playing field. McMillan was inching his way back into dominating control until Saetang suffered an eye poke. The official stopped the fight and potentially the momentum built by McMillan. After a few moments, Saetang was good to go, and so was McMillan. The Villain continued to reign down heavy blows, eventually catching Saetang with a big right hand that separated her from her senses, giving McMillan the first round KO victory.

And now, it’s time for the Co-Main Event. The Heavyweight Championship is on the line as the newly crowned Sergey Loktev looks to make his first defense against DeMarcus Gresham. The highly anticipated bout did not disappoint, as both of these behemoths brought their A-game. It was a back and forth slugfest that showed Loktev was not afraid to stand and trade with the boxing champion. However, Gresham was able to utilize his boxing skills more proficiently throughout the five round affair, slipping and countering to initially gain and then keep the edge. The two showed each other a ton of respect but after the full twenty-five minute war, Loktev gave a valiant effort, but left a bloody mess and empty handed as the decision was clearly in favor of The Gifted DeMarcus Gresham.

As we reach the final fight of the night, you would think after a five round war that just took place, the crowd would be exhausted — but no. The crowd was still on their feet, and even amplified to greater heights during the walkout. Derrius Webb was accompanied by his mentor, Union GP Cruiserweight Champion Roscoe Robinson, while the Welterweight Champion Tre Rozier was accompanied by big brother, the undefeated Union GP Heavyweight Champion Kennard Rozier. Despite the back and forth between all of these big name fighters, Tre and Derrius touched gloves to start it off before engaging in a wild exchange. Both fighters were landing big punches out the gate and had everyone on the edge of their seats. After the exchange, Webb pieced up Rozier with a couple of stinging jabs while Rozier retaliated with some brutal kicks to the body and thighs. Webb slowed things down a bit, slipping punches and countering with big damaging blows. Once he took control of the fight, Webb launched a rapid series of punches that took Rozier from one end of the cage to the other. With Rozier pressed up against the fence, Webb launched a couple of jabs and then a big hook. The big right hand dropped Rozier to the mat, but a few up-kicks created some separation. Rozier was looking to regain his wits on the ground, but Webb came crashing down, connecting with a thunderous hammerfist that bounced Rozier’s head off the canvas. Webb landed another brutal strike within the storm before the referee decided to jump in and put a stop to the fight.

The fight was over for Tre and Derrius, but things heated up and eventually boiled over between Kennard and Roscoe. After Mike Dempsey announced the winner, the two Union GP Champs got in a shoving match and spit some words at each other before eventually being split apart by their respective cornermen and arena security.
