EVEREST // SIN CITY

ROUND 1: There was absolutely no feeling out process in this fight. Parsons and Marshall touched gloves, and Marshall immediately took Parsons down with a single leg. Parsons scrambled to get back up to her feet, but in the process of pushing Marshall away, she ended up poking her in the eye, and Cody Grant paused the fight. Back on the feet, Marshall once again presses forward, this time tying Parsons up in a clinch, but Parsons is able to pommel for position and turn Marshall back to the fence. Marshall struggles against Parsons’ strength, but the Twin Cities rep kept her secured, eventually grabbing a Thai plum and landing a MASSIVE knee to Marshall’s face. Parsons tries to follow up, but Marshall’s able to get free of the clinch. Marshall throws a huge straight punch that misses wildly, and eats a couple jabs followed by a huge right hook from Parsons that drops her to the mat! Parsons lands a pair of kicks to the legs while Marshall remains on her back, but eventually Cody Grant stands Victoria up. Parsons throws a straight kick to the solar plexus that visibly takes the air out of Marshall, then lands an enormous overhand right that puts her down and out. Cody Grant didn’t even need to wave the fight off, Parsons was already walking away before Marshall even hit the mat.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: Glimpses of the kind of wrestling Victoria Marshall brings to the Strawweight division, but this fight was all about Rachel Parsons. A great performance in her first Everest fight, and a walk-off knockout to boot. Here’s hoping Victoria’s alright.

ROUND 1: Garret comes out with a series of tentative jabs that don’t make any contact; by contrast, Gotti comes out with a feint that gets Garret’s attention, and a massive double leg takedown that drives Garret to the mat. Garret tries to land some punches from the back, but Gotti avoids most of them with ease, only taking one to the body that doesn’t seem to do much damage. Gotti makes an effort to pass Garret’s guard, but Garret’s ultimately able to keep his position until Anthony Hamlett gets impatient, and stands them up after minimal activity. Garret’s punches get a little more determined now, but Gotti’s able to avoid any meaningful contact, and comes back with a series of jabs of his own! Garret gets clipped and tries to tie Gotti up in a clinch, but can’t secure it before Gotti circles away. Gotti lands a one-two combination before securing his own clinch, backing Garret up against the cage. Garret manages to create enough space that he can throw a knee up the middle, but Gotti releases the clinch and avoids the knee--and with Garret off-balance, Gotti lands a HUGE counter hook to the ribs! Garret circles away to get his breath, but Gotti pursues him; Garret throws a series of leg kicks, but none of them connect...and, indeed, the last one spins Garret around, and Gotti pounces on another takedown! Garret manages to roll through and establishes his guard, but Gotti’s in top. Similar to earlier, there’s a relatively long stalemate between the two, before Garret tries to force his way back to his feet--and Gotti slices through his guard, into side control! While Garret’s adjust, Gotti secures a double wristlock, and steps over Garret’s head to secure the position. He torques the Kimura until Garret shouts, and Anthony Hamlett steps in to call the fight!

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: Once the fight got going, what a masterclass performance Silvio Gotti Jr. put on. This is a man to watch in the Welterweight division for the future. As for Garret, hopefully we see better performances from him in the future, but he needs to be more aggressive and confident in his approach to the fight.

ROUND 1: Tate opens the round aggressive, rushing across the cage and launching a pair of huge body kicks to start the fight off, but Lacroix’s able to get her guard up before any contact is made; it does draw her attention, though, and Tate feigns another kick before dropping for a double leg shot that sweep Rebecca off her feet! There’s some jockeying for position once the fight’s on the ground--Rebecca throws a couple shots up at Tate but nothing lands with any major impact, while Tate uses the space Rebecca creates to try to pass to side mount. Rebecca defends the transition well enough, but Tate switches from a pass to a kneebar attempt! Rebecca’s able to clear her leg before she’s in real danger, though, and manages to not only gain top position, but pass to half-guard in the process. Rebecca almost secures an Americana, but Tate’s able to free her arm before Rebecca can get in a position to really secure the lock--so instead, Rebecca just drops some massive elbows on Tate! Tate blocks most of them, but one sneaks through and lands pretty heavily on her temple. Rebecca switches from elbows to hammerfists, using Tate’s focus on the strikes to try to pass to side mount, but Tate’s able to hold her position, and eventually the official stands the fighters back up, despite multiple submission attempts and a ground and pound attack going on. Once the fight is restarted, Rebecca immediately tries to re-establish a grappling exchange, but Tate has no interest and counters with a couple quick jabs before circling away. Rebecca unleashes a series of leg kicks and body kicks, but none of them land, until Tate gets a little too confident and starts taunting Rebecca--which she responds with another massive body kick that lands just below the ribs! Tate clearly felt the kick, and responds with a few jabs to keep Rebecca honest. Rebecca lands another stinging leg kick, before spinning around with a massive spinning back kick, but Tate’s able to avoid the contact, then rush forward and drive Rebecca back to the mat with a double leg takedown while she’s off balance! There’s not much time for anything to happen, though, before the horn sounds to end round 1.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Lacroix. Despite getting taken down, Rebecca was the more aggressive fighter. I think that will count for a lot, when Tate ultimately wasn’t able to do much with her takedown.

ROUND 2: In contrast to the first round, the second starts out much slower--the first minute of round two is a lot of what you might expect from round 1, circling and gauging distance and trying to provoke an attack to counter. Lacroix’s the first one to really engage, feigning a takedown before coming up with a huge uppercut! It honestly looked like she threw everything into that, but Tate’s able to deflect most of the impact, and instead of landing the massive punch, Rebecca eventually finds herself tied up in an over-under clinch and pressed back against the cage. Rebecca throws a knee to Tate’s thigh, but Tate’s able to avoid most of the impact and counters with a quick foot sweep takedown! Rebecca hits the mat, but Tate doesn’t go with her--and that leaves an opening for Rebecca to launch an up-kick! Tate gets her head out of the way, but takes the full force of the kick to the chest. It’s the only meaningful thing done with the takedown, though, and eventually Anthony Hamlett stands Rebecca up. Rebecca launches an audacious attempt at an Imanari Roll as soon as the fight’s restarted, but Tate’s able to free her leg before she’s in significant danger--and, rather than risk anything, Tate just steps back and forces Rebecca to get back up. Despite not going to ground with Rebecca earlier, Tate shoots a single leg takedown as soon as the fight’s restarted, and this time uses it to pass all the way to side mount! Rebecca throws a couple punches from underneath, but nothing that’s going to do much damage; Tate, however, seems content for quite a while to just hold her position, which ultimately leaves Rebecca enough room to switch her hips and recover her guard--and, immediately, throw up an armbar! Tate starts to spin out, but Rebecca seems to expect it and quickly switches to a triangle choke! It looks tight for a second, but Tate’s able to free her head and back out of danger, forcing Rebecca back to her feet. Rebecca lands a stinging low leg kick just before the round ends.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Lacroix (20-18 through 2 rounds). Tate landed a couple good takedowns, but didn’t do anything with them, so the round goes to Rebecca for the aggression.

ROUND 3: Another slow start to the round, Underwood circling the cage while Rebecca maintains her spot in the middle, launching a low kick that whizzes by harmlessly. Tate moves in with Rebecca off balance and catches a grip on her head, then secures a second and establishes the Thai plum! Despite the good position, though, not much comes from it--Rebecca gets her hands up and tries to push Tate away, ultimately jarring her head backward until Tate releases the clinch. There’s no real damage there, though, and Tate’s quick to swing a low kick, but Rebecca checks it with ease--giving Tate an opportunity to slip in and land another double leg takedown! Rebecca throws up a triangle attempt, but Tate keeps her posture to keep her from really locking the choke in...so instead, Rebecca overhooks Tate’s arm, and switches to the armbar! For a second, it looks tight, but Tate’s able to free her arm and eventually get out and back away, forcing Rebecca back to her feet. Both ladies look tired, and take a few moments to circle the cage again. Rebecca tries to cut Tate off with a series of low kicks, but none of them land, before Tate lands another big takedown! The two struggle for position, Tate trying to pass while Rebecca tries to get on top, but ultimately the only change is Tate’s able to free a leg and pass to half-guard before Anthony Hamlett stands them back up. The last action of the fight is Rebecca throw one last leg kick, that Tate’s able to check as the horn sounds.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Underwood (29-28 Lacroix). Not the most eventful round, but a couple takedowns probably won her the round, even though Rebecca was the more aggressive fighter once it hit the ground.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: There’s a lot to process here--not the least of which is how every single judge scored round 2 a 10-8. I have absolutely no idea how they scored that round a 10-8, unless I missed them taking a point from Tate for something? And I feel like I wouldn’t have missed something that crucial. I think they ultimately got the winner right, though--I think Rebecca did enough to get the decision, but this won’t be a fight either of these ladies wants to watch on replay, Here’s hoping for better performances from them as the season rolls on.

ROUND 1: Both Silva and Rodriguez start the fight tentative, gauging their distance against one another with jabs and straight punches. Rodriguez is the first to connect, landing a one-two combo that backs Silva up some...but as Rodriguez steps in to engage, he eats a MASSIVE right hand from Silva that stumbles him! Rodriguez swings his own big right hook to keep Silva at bay, but misses wildly, and Silva lands a stinging straight right instead. Rodriguez has to circle away to avoid Silva’s pursuit, but he eats a couple jabs in doing so. Silva’s combos are coming quick now, one-twos to keep Rodriguez’s guard up--then a liver kick that nearly doubles Rodriguez over! A massive left hook drops Rodriguez to the mat, and before Silva can do any more damage, the fight is called off!

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: What a statement by Francisco Silva. He barely let Kenneth Rodriguez get out of the starting blocks, and damn near ended the fight with that liver kick. Great performance, it will be interesting to see how he does this season.

ROUND 1: The fight begins and both men clearly have respect for each other--nobody’s engaging recklessly, everything is calculated. Taylor paws with a jab to gauge his distance, but Holt sees an opening and launches a straight right that just BARELY misses Taylor’s chin! Taylor pounces and tries to secure a takedown, but Holt keeps his balance, and ultimately Taylor pulls guard to get the fight to the ground. Taylor tries to switch his hips and turns Holt over, but Holt manages to keep his position--at first, but Taylor switches up and eventually rolls Holt over, establishing full mount! Holt tries to roll to his back, but Taylor doesn’t let him get that far, and eventually switches from full mount to side mount to keep better control of Holt. The two trade relatively ineffective shots on the ground, before Taylor switches back to mount--and sits up high on Holt’s chest, obviously searching for some kind of submission. Holt manages to roll over and, with Taylor not on his center of balance, Holt gains top control, albeit in Taylor’s guard. Holt throws some huge elbows from inside the guard, but Taylor blocks most of them, and uses Holt’s commitment to the strikes to turn him right back over to mount! There’s no significant activity, though, and despite the advantageous position, Cody Grant stands the fighters up. Holt shoots a single leg takedown on the rostart, and though Taylor resists, Holt eventually sweeps his leg out from under him, only making it as far as open guard however. Taylor tries to roll through for a kneebar, but Holt’s able to free his leg and pass into half-guard. Taylor traps an arm and tries to secure a straight armlock from half-guard, but Holt is too good to get caught with--however, Taylor switches his hips ups and throws up a triangle on the counter! Holt pulls his arm free, and eventually gets his head out, before backing away from the danger and forcing Taylor to his feet. Taylor shoots a double leg takedown the moment the fight’s restarted, though, and Holt is put back down. The two jockey for position, Holt keeping his guard locked while trying to land punches from the bottom. It takes a while, but Taylor’s eventually able to coax Holt’s guard open, and swiftly moves into side mount! He gets too aggressive, though, looking to pass straight to mount, and Holt’s able to make space and scramble to his feet, just as the horn sounds to end round 1.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Taylor. The takedowns won him the round, almost certainly..

ROUND 2: Holt opens the round by digging a massive body hook, but Taylor’s able to avoid most of the impact, and counters with a big head kick that just misses--there’s no feeling out process to open round 2, like there was in round 1. Taylor ducks under a crushing left straight from Holt that might have turned his lights out, and Taylor uses Holt’s forward momentum to drive him to the mat with a double leg takedown! It takes some jockeying, but Taylor’s able to pass into side mount, but just like the end of round 1, he gets too aggressive in chasing the mount, and Holt’s able to scramble back to his feet. Taylor shoots another double leg, but this time Holt’s able to sprawl and avoid hitting the mat. Taylor throws a straight punch that barely graze Holt’s cheek, before dropping for a single leg! This time, he gets it, and passes straight to side control. Rather than go straight to mount this time, Taylor hammers Holt’s ribs with a series of elbows that visibly hurt him. Taylor tries to pass to mount, but Holt’s able to prevent it--so Taylor spins and sits back for an armbar! A moment earlier, and that might’ve been the fight, but as it stands, Holt’s able to free his arm before it gets locked out, and he turns over into Taylor’s guard. Holt drops some big elbows from the top, but only maybe one of them get through Taylor’s guard. There’s a constant battle for position now, as Taylor turns Holt back over to the mount, but Holt’s almost immediately able to recover his half-guard--until Taylor keeps the momentum going, and manages to take Holt’s back! He doesn’t have his hooks in at first, but after a couple shots that more distract Holt than anything, Taylor’s able to slip one hook in. However, the official doesn’t see much activity from them, and stands them up--despite Taylor’s incredibly advantageous position. More on that later. Taylor lands a huge hook to the body, then shoots a single leg takedown--but he can’t get this one, and no small part of it might be the amount of energy he’s spent. He looks tired, but he keeps driving and eventually manages to secure his takedown again. Not much happens on the ground, though, before the horn sounds.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Taylor (20-18 Taylor through 2 rounds). The takedowns continue to be his friend, Holt just has no answer for them. He established a lot of dominant positions, but didn’t land much from them. Nonetheless, he definitely won the round.

ROUND 3: Holt opens the round by feigning a left hand, then launching a big right uppercut, perhaps looking to make up for the last two rounds with one big shot--but Taylor parries the shot, and tags him with a stinging low leg kick. Both men trade pawing jabs, neither landing anything significant for...a while, until Taylor drops for a takedown that Holt’s able to block, forcing Taylor to pull guard. Holt passes to half-guard with relative ease, before slamming Taylor’s midsection with a series of elbows! Taylor’s able to catch one of Holt’s arms and isolate it, eventually switch his hips in an effort to secure a kimura...but Holt frees his arm and uses the opportunity to pass straight back to half-guard. After that exchange, though, the action slows down for a bit; Holt tries to free his leg nad pass to side mount, but Taylor’s able to give him a bump to make space, and eventually escape back to his feet. Both men trade a few pitter-patter punches as they get up, but nothing significant lands--until Taylor catches one of Holt’s punches and throws a flying armbar up! Holt’s face contorts as his arm gets extended, but he doesn’t tap--eventually, he slams Taylor down, breaking the hold and passing into side mount! Holt drops a few more elbows on Taylor this time, but Taylor’s able to cover himself reasonably well and prevent any significant damage. Taylor’s eventually able to navigate his way back to half-guard, then to full guard. Holt drops a flurry of punches within Taylor’s guard, but none land with any major impact, and eventually, the action stalls until Cody Grant stand the fighters up. Holt winds up a massive right hand, but Taylor ducks under it at the last second and shoots a single leg takedown. Holt manages to stay on his feet at first, but eventually Taylor pulls him to the mat and sits back for an ankle lock! For a second, it looks like Holt may tap, but eventually he’s able to free his leg, though it allows Taylor to scramble for half-guard. Holt throws a couple shots from underneath, but Taylor’s in too tight for them to have an effect, and eventually he passes to side mount just before the horn sounds to end round 3.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Taylor (30-27 Taylor). Once again, the takedowns and ground work were his friend, and the flying armbar attempt was the most significant moment of the round by a lot. Should be a comfortable win for him.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: When I said it should be a comfortable win for Taylor, I didn’t expect another 10-8 round to be scored. Again, I’m not sure how you justify that; admittedly, Holt never really got out of the gate, but I didn’t think any of those rounds were going to be scored 10-8. Either way, a fairly solid showing from Taylor, who looked threatening on the ground.

ROUND 1: The fight STARTS with the biggest shot we’ve seen all night: Mack Sharpe lands an absolutely ENORMOUS right hook to the body to open the contest, and it only takes 1 shot to cause some bruising on Mike Hunt’s side. Hunt, though, isn’t afraid of engaging, and lands a one-two combo, followed by a big left hook of his own! Sharpe looks stunned for a second, but only a second; as Hunt comes in to follow up his combo, Sharpe launches an uppercut that would’ve sent any other fighter into orbit! As it stands, it sends Hunt straight to the canvas, out like a light.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: Jesus Christ. I mean, what else can you say? This was 45 seconds of brutality. That knockout was genuinely scary, here’s hoping Mike’s alright. But Mack Sharpe, goodness gracious, what a statement to the Heavyweight Division.

ROUND 1: CC starts the round off hot, landing a massive looping punch almost straight from the horn, that clearly rings Rebecca’s bell and sends her circling away abruptly. CC pursues her, but Rebecca keeps her at pay with a few tentative jabs, then a big straight punch that connects! CC eats the punch and steps in, throwing several shots of her own that force Rebecca into trying to secure a clinch to keep CC’s power at bay--but Flynn’s not having that. She pushes herself free and abruptly lands an absolutely MASSIVE spinning backfist that almost buckles Rebecca’s knees. Rebecca tries to drop for a takedown, but CC doesn’t bite, and Rebecca’s forced to bail before she even makes her shot; CC, meanwhile, lands an impressive one-two combination, followed by a CRUSHING haymaker! Rebecca gets back on her bike, circling away from CC’s power hand, but she moves straight into another nice one-two combo, punctuated with a stinging leg kick. Rebecca turns her aggression up, moving forward behind her jab, but CC’s able to avoid the punches and counter with a high kick that Rebecca’s only just able to deflect. Rebecca throws a lightning quick leg kick, but CC’s still able to get out of the way, and as Rebecca spins around to recover, she gets SOCKED with a but uppercut! Somehow, though, she’s still on her feet, but between the crushing blows CC’s landing, and the constant movement to avoid what strikes do miss? When round 1 comes to an end, Rebecca looks tired.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Flynn, although an argument could be made for a 10-8. Utter dominance.

ROUND 2: Rebecca opens the round with a quick low kick that misses, and CC pounces, unloading MASSIVE combinations that visibly rock Rebecca’s head back. She punctuates the assault with a body kick that lands with a smack, forcing Rebecca to try to clinch up once again; CC’s happy to keep the fight at range, though, and blasts Rebecca with punch after punch after punch, until Rebecca’s legs look like they’re made of jello. The official warns Rebecca to protect herself, and she puts her guard up, but CC balsts her with an uppercut straight through the guard--and finishes the fight off with a huge haymaker right that finally buckles Rebecca’s legs, and ends the contest.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: CC Flynn with an utterly dominant performance here; if she can keep that up, she’ll be a tough night for anybody at 145. The inevitable rematch with Fran later this season is already looking more and more appetizing. For Rebecca, you have to admire the tenacity and the heart she showed, but I have to hope we see better performances from her in the future.

ROUND 1: Dax and Sergey touch gloves to get the round started, and then it’s off to the freaking races--Loktev throws a furious low kick, that Dax only just checks, before launching a blistering three punch combination that forces Loktev back...for a moment; as Dax presses forward, Loktev throws a huge right hand that Dax is able to parry and counter with a one-two combination. Loktev throws big, heavy leather, but Dax is able to avoid most of the contact, and tries to pin Sergey back against the cage. Loktev manages to circle away from the cage, though in doing so he runs into another two punch combination. Loktev starts throwing punches back to try to keep Dax from hitting him, and while both men wing punches at each other, neither lands. Sergey’s able to tie Dax up in a clinch, but Dax pommels for a bodylock, lifts Sergey up, and slams him to the mat! Sergey’s able to recover his guard, though, but Dax doesn’t even seem worried about that--he launches a series of hammer fists down on Sergey’s face that open a small cut on Loktev’s forehead! With some success early on, Dax keeps hammering on Loktev, but his technique gets sloppy and Loktev is able to stop the onslaught and tie up one of Dax’s arms. The two men jockey for position, with Dax trying to use a series of elbows to keep Loktev’s attention so he can pass, but Loktev blocking any movement, and eventually managing to break Dax’s posture and lock his guard back up. Dax’s breathing gets heavy at about the middle point of the round, and Loktev takes advantage, managing to roll him over but only getting as far as Dax’s guard. Dax tries to throw a few shots from underneath, but nothing major lands, while Loktev drops some big punches down on Dax that rock him! Alternating shots to the head and body, Cody Grant warns Dax to defend himself or the fight could be stopped...but, ultimately, the round comes to an end before Sergey can put the finishing touches on Dax.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Loktev. Rocky start, with Dax landing the takedown and the better exchanges on the feet, but Sergey turned it around once he got on top.

ROUND 2: Round 2 begins like round 1, a touch of the gloves and then both men start trading punches; Loktev takes the initiative with a big straight right, but Dax avoids the impact...but, similarly, he whiffs on his counter attack. Dax drops for a double leg takedown, but Sergey’s able to sprawl and get away before he hits the mat. Loktev ties Dax up in a Thai clinch, but when he goes to push Dax against the cage, Dax is able to free himself. Instead, both men exchange punches once again--and miss, wildly. Dax throws a huge straight right, but Sergey’s able to get out of the way and counters with a massive right hand of his own! Dax loosk rocked, and drops for a single leg takedown, but Sergey’s able to keep his balance and lands a few punches to the side of the head while defending the shot. Eventually, he’s able to free his leg, and Loktev takes the center of the cage again, forcing Dax to spend more energy coming to him...and when he does, he gets blasted by a jab-uppercut combination that stumbles Dax back! Dax immediately drops for another takedown, but Sergey’s wise to it and avoids the shot altogether. He lets Dax get up to his feet, and the two men start exchanging punches again--Dax misses wildly, and takes a big, open-mouth breath of air just before a MASSIVE counter right almost turns his lights out! Sergey gets the best of the exchanges on the feet now, opening a small cut on Dax’s cheek, then stinging him with a kick to the inner thigh! Dax stumbles backward, and Sergey seems to smell blood in the water--he pushes forward, landing a nasty punch that rocks Dax and swells up his knows, then another kick to the leg that keeps him off balance. Sergey lands a few more straight punches, and Dax can barely even get his hands up to protect himself. While he stays on his feet, he’s not protecting himself, and the official pulls Sergey away and waves the fight off!

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: What a turn around! Dax looked like he might’ve had an easy night early on in this fight, avoiding a lot of Sergey’s early strikes, getting that takedown, even dropping some big bombs on the ground, but when Sergey got going, he was not going to be stopped. I wonder how different the fight might’ve gone had Dax not started looking gassed in the second--hopefully we see that improve over the course of the season, but both men had moments of brilliance in this fight.

ROUND 1: Fran opens the bout swinging wildly; a couple shots miss, but one cracks into Harris’s chin and stuns her early! Trying to close the fight out quick, Fran follows up with an uppercut that lands, but Harris is able to mitigate some of the impact, before circling away from an oncoming barrage of punches. Harris throws a looping right hand, which only misses by a couple inches, as Fran jumps backwards and counters with a couple jabs. Harris pushes forward, though, and lands a three punch combo that staggers Fran, punctuated with an uppercut of her own! Fran steps in and ties Harris up in a clinch, but Harris is able to turn Fran back toward the cage and take control of the fight. Harris throws a knee that Fran’s able to deflect, and use that momentum to push away from the clinch before Harris can do much more; while Fran’s circling back to the center of the cage, however, Harris drops and shoots a double-leg takedown! Fran’s barely able to sprawl down and prevent hitting the mat, keeping hold of a wizzer so when Harris gets back to her feet, they’re tied up in a clinch. Harris throws a couple more knees in the clinch that have minimal effect, while Fran lands one shot to the head and two to the body. Harris tries to twist Fran to the mat, but Fran’s able to keep her balance and, instead, snatches an arm-in guillotine! It’s not very tight, though, and Harris is able to force Fran to the mat and free her head. After a bit of a stalemate once they hit the ground, Fran manages to turn Harris over, and with some struggle, pass first to half-guard, then to side mount. However, Fran’s not doing much on top, and eventually the official stands them up. Back on the feet, Harris lands a couple jabs that knock Fran’s head back a little, but she counters with a MASSIVE uppercut! Then another! Harris throws a decent one-two combo, but Fran gets out of the way and lands a massive series of punches that have Anthony Hamlett warning Harris to protect herself--and then Fran lands a right hand that buckles Harris’s knees! Before she can do any more damage, Anthony Hamlett waves the fight off.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: Though the stats look a little lopsided, this was a pretty entertaining fight to me; Fran looked impressive, and we saw flashes from Harris, although for someone with a wrestling background, we didn’t see much of that. That said, she had to open her Everest career with the Featherweight Champion, and she didn’t look out of place; Fran just looked better. Both ladies will be interesting to watch going forward.

ROUND 1: One thing that caught me by surprise early on was the confidence Katya came into this fight with--she opened with a high kick that Elliot was able to backpedal and avoid, but Katya immediately called him out, asking if he was going to back up every time she threw anything. And, to be honest, it was the story of the early part of the fight--Katya would throw body shots, or leg kicks, or one overhand right, and Elliot simply backed away or side-stepped to avoid the contact. When she finally did land, though, it was a stinging inner thigh kick that Elliot had to shake off...and, in the process, allowed Katya to move in and secure a clinch, backing the Strawweight Champion up against the cage. Elliot muscles his way to the dominant position, though, before dropping the pretense of a clinch and just unloading a series of punches on the debuting Russian. She eats a few, but eventually manages to circle away from the cage...and, almost, into a huge left hook! Katya just avoids the shot, but misses her counter leg kick. Elliot steps in to attack and gets absolutely CRACKED with an uppercut that snaps his head back! Katya moves in to follow up, but Elliot’s able to keep her at range until she’s forced to just paw at him with jabs--and gets caught with a straight right over the top of her punch! Both land a few shots each, but Elliot creates enough space that Katya’s advantage is negated...so he unloads a Superman Punch that damn near crushes Katya’s cheek bone! The pace of round 1 shows no signs of letting up, both Champion and Challenger throwing heavy leather; Katya’s punches start getting wild, though, and Elliot’s able to land a series of straights that start to swell the Russian’s nose. Elliot doesn’t let off the gas, throwing shot after shot, landing more often than he misses, until he goes to the well with a Superman punch again, and Katya side steps and counters with a big right hook! It doesn’t deter the Strawweight Champion, though, who composes himself and utterly smashes Katya with an overhand right; it’s only by the grace of whatever higher power Belinskaya believes in that she’s still standing, but she is--and she’s HURT. Elliot relentlessly pursues a first round finish, but despite the punches he lands after rocking Katya, the horn blows and Cody Grant sends them back to their corners.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 McMillan. Easy money round for the Champion.

ROUND 2: Knowing she’s down a round, Katya opens round 2 pushing the action--and, unfortunately, eating a big right hook straight off the horn. She keeps moving forward, though, and Elliot has to keep her at bay with a few one-two combos, then a big uppercut to finish it off! The Russian shakes the punch off, but she’s definitely showing the damage of the fight, and the more she comes forward, the more Elliot’s able to start to pick her apart; double-jabs and one-twos that keep Katya out of effective striking range, then a HUGE left hook that crumbles Belinskaya to the mat for the finish.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: Let’s start with the Champion: Elliot looked every bit the force that tore through 115 lbs to eventually dethrone Gianna Howard, and looks set to continue that run this season. but don’t discount Katya, after this fight. The stats don’t look great, but nobody’s stats look particularly great against McMillan. She landed HEAVY shots that, on any other day, might have won her the fight. It just wasn’t her day today.

ROUND 1: The fight begins with no feeling out whatsoever--Caden throws a few jabs that DeMarcus counters with big straight rights! Caden’s able to test the chin of the Heavyweight Champ early on with a big uppercut, but DeMarcus is up to the task and cracks Caden right back with some solid straight punches. Caden circles away and throws a few jabs, but DeMarcus steps in and lands a couple crosses to counter the jabs. Caden tries to load up a big straight right, but Gresham avoids it--he does eat a follow up shot, but he’s able to shake it off pretty easily. Caden keeps loading up heavy straight punches, and Gresham keeps avoiding them, but when he throws a...I don’t even know how to describe it, “an unorthodox punch” to the body, it lands firmly on the Heavyweight Champion. Caden jabs his way back into range, and eventually ties Gresham up in a single collar tie, but when he tries to push him against the fence, Gresham turns away and presses Caden back against the cage instead! Caden isn’t deterred, throwing some BIG shots to the body, but Gresham blocks most of the impact. Gresham doesn’t get the opportunity to land much before Caden gets off the fence, and when he turns back to engage with his challenger, Caden lands a big hook to the body! Caden lands a nice one-two combination, before tying Gresham back up in a clinch; this time, he manages to keep control, and lands some powerful body shots from the clinch! Gresham tries to get away from the clinch, circling off the cage and trying to pommel himself to a better position, but Caden keeps control and lands some more massive body shots...but he gets too aggressive, Gresham pushes himself free! Gresham comes back with some absolutely MASSIVE hooks to the head and body that force Caden back, but eventually Caden’s able to tie up one of DeMarcus’s arms to stop the onslaught. Caden goes back to what worked for him a moment ago, slamming Gresham with a series of body shots from the clinch, but Gresham manages to close what little space there is between them, and stop most of Caden’s attack. Gresham uses his raw power to turn Caden back against the cage, and absolutely BLASTS him with a series of uppercuts! Caden looks hurt, and Gresham looks intent on finishing him up against the cage, slamming him with body shots and one more up top before the round ends.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Gresham. Honestly, close round, I thought DeMarcus was more effective with what he landed, but Caden’s aggression and control might give him the round. I wouldn’t be mad either way.

ROUND 2: Caden opens the round throwing that unusual punch to the body he threw in the first round, and lands it to the body once again. It’s only a brief engagement, though, with Caden choosing to stick and move in the early part of the second round. He lands a couple nice jabs that start to mark up Gresham’s cheek, then flicks out a couple body shots that Gresham deflects. Gresham paws with a jab to get his distance again, while Caden responds with a straight punch that DeMarcus blocks. Caden’s clearly found a rhythm, whether Gresham blocks the punches or not--he lands a huge counter uppercut as Gresham leads with a straight right, then adds a left hook that only narrowly misses, and finally a MASSIVE straight left that might have turned out the lights for the Heavyweight Champion, had it landed. Gresham, though, is on the backfoot, circling away and not getting a whole lot of offense going; when he does throw, Caden seems to be a step ahead, countering a straight punch from Gresham with a crushing overhand left that might have put a lesser man down! Despite getting the better of the striking exchanges, Caden moves in to try to clinch up with Gresham, but Gresham throws a quick one-two to force Caden to retreat. The two men circle each other, each flicking out ineffective jabs, before Caden times DeMarcus’s perfectly, and counters the jab with a straight right over the top! He follows up with a huge uppercut, and it’s a small miracle the Heavyweight Champ is still standing! Gresham’s still moving forward, though, and launches a couple body shots that miss--and he eats a spinning backfist for his troubles! Gresham takes a step back and circles around Caden, who follows him without over-committing, throwing one last body shot that Gresham avoids before the horn sounds to end round 2.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Caden (19-19 through 2 rounds). EASY round for Caden. Gresham took his foot off the gas, and Caden touched him up for it. I wonder if Gresham’s getting tired from having to dodge the punches so much, or if he has a plan that just didn’t work out in that round.

ROUND 3: Caden lands a quick right hook to start the round, then another one to the body, before Gresham’s able to block a series of jabs that gives him the opportunity to counter with a thunderous right cross! Caden only barely avoids a shot that might have put him down, before coming back with a picture-perfect uppercut! Gresham staggers backwards, and Caden’s pressing forward like he wants to finish the fight! BIG, BIG SHOTS land, before Caden grabs hold of Gresham’s head, looking to land the finishing blows in the clinch. Gresham’s able to pommel for an advantage, before shocking the clinch off--but Caden’s not deterred, and launches a flurry of powerful shots to the head, and digging hooks to the body! The official warns DeMarcus to protect himself, and the Heavyweight Champion gets hold of a clinch again, this time to settle the fight down. Neither man does much more than take a moment to recover, although Caden does throw a couple body shots to try to drive the air back out of Gresham. Eventually, Anthony HAmlett breaks the clinch and separates the fighters. Caden lands a straight punch that gets through Gresham’s guard, then launches a CRUSHING right hand, but Gresham’s able to duck underneath it. A jab to the nose and a hook that clips Gresham’s chin leaves his face marked up again, before Caden grabs Gresham in a clinch again and forces him back against the fence. A few uppercuts land that rock the Heavyweight Champ’s head back, then Caden launches a flurry of straight punches that largely tag Gresham! Gresham manages to push away and circle out of the bad spot, but he’s visibly uncomfortable still, and Caden’s not letting up. Yet again, they’re tied up in a clinch, but this time, Caden’s aggression gets the better of him, and Gresham turns him against the fence and UNLOADS on him.! Huge shots from Gresham that stumble Caden backwards, even as he tries to circle away! Caden grabs a clinch once again, this time to stop Gresham’s onslaught, and slams the Champ with body shots that land just below the ribs. Gresham eventually frees himself and throws a big punch, but Caden ducks under and counters with a straight right that nearly clips DeMarcus’s chin! Gresham steps back, but before he can re-engage, the horn sounds to end the fight.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Caden (29-28 Caden). Similar to round 1, I thought Gresham looked more effective with what DID land, but unlike the first, it wasn’t that much. Caden’s control and aggression in the clinch won him the round, and the fight.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: Full disclosure, I hate fights that end up against the fence for most of the fight, so this wasn’t my personal cup of tea for large stretches. HOWEVER, setting that aside, Caden’s ability to control the pace and placement of the fight was very impressive. And when they were separated and throwing punches, hoo baby, both men showed the Heavyweight division why they’re here. Any of those punches could’ve knocked lesser men into orbit. Caden looked particularly impressive against the Champ, while Gresham showed exactly how good he can be even in situations that don’t favor him. I honestly think we’ll see both men face off in this new playoff format.

ROUND 1: So, the main event begins...honestly, how a main event should begin: Webb and Jackson touch gloves, and Webb immediately spins around and throws a spinning back kick that nearly crumbles Jackson right away! He followed it up by slamming a couple hooks to the body, but Jackson gets his guard down and blocks most of the impact. Jackson pushes Webb away and throws a high kick, but loses his footing and slips. Webb slams Jackson’s legs with kicks while he’s on the ground, but it’s only a few seconds before he just takes a few steps back and Jackson’s able to get on his feet. Jackson bobs and weaves to try to make Webb focus on the wrong place, but when he launches an uppercut, Webb’s aware of where it’s coming from and parries the strike. Webb responds with a massive high kick, but Jackson gets his guard up and responds with a few counter jabs that don’t do much damage, but keep Webb at bay for now. Webb keeps pressing forward, though, slamming a kick into Jackson’s knee that nearly buckles it, then attempting a spinning back kick again! This one, Jackson’s able to block and counter with a couple stinging shots to Webb’s head. Jackson drops for a takedown, but Webb counters with a wrecking ball of a head kick that nearly drops Jackson! There’s some swelling around Jackson’s left eye from just that kick! Webb keeps on the offensive, throwing a front kick that gets blocked before stepping in close--nearly into an uppercut from Jackson, but he’s just able to avoid it. Jackson tries to get in tight, either for a clinch or a takedown, but Webb tags him with leg kicks every time he makes a move, so he’s forced to stand and trade; Jackson misses with a straight punch, but then avoids Webb’s counter right hook. Webb checks JAckson’s leg kick, then throws a big left hook that’s obviously trying to close the book on Jackson’s night--but Jackson just manages to get out of the way. So Webb goes back to what worked, and connects with a HUGE head kick that wobbles Jackson’s legs! Webb tags Jackson in the legs with kick after kick after kick, forcing Jackson to try to stop the onslaught the only way he can think of--he drops for a single leg takedown! It’s a struggle, especially as loopy as he is, but he eventually manages to trip Webb down to the mat! The pace of the fight grinds to a halt, as Jackson’s unable to pass Webb’s guard, but equally, Webb’s unable to improve his position. Jackson lands a few body shots before finally passing into half-guard after the best part of a minute-long stalemate, but it’s not enough to keep Cody Grant from standing the men up. The fight barely has a chance to restart, though, before the horn sounds to end round 1.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Webb. Easy. There were a couple moments there that I thought Jackson was done. All credit to his heart and toughness, but round 1 definitely belonged to Derrius.

ROUND 2: Jackson starts the round by shooting for a takedown, and nearly eats a high knee from Webb no sooner than the round started! He’s not deterred, though, and doubles down on the shoot, eventually getting Webb to the mat again. This time, there’s no stalemate; Jackson passes all the way to side control with relative ease, then drops a MASSIVE elbow down on Webb’s head! Webb tries to get some semblance of his guard back, but Jackson cracks him with an elbow again, forcing Webb to just block his head. When he blocks the elbows, Jackson turns to hammer fists that crack into Webb’s body, then right on his jawline! Jackson peppers Webb’s body with punches, but doesn’t draw much of a reaction--in fact, Webb only moves when he feels Jackson trying to move into mount, and Webb manages to creat space and scramble to his feet before he can end up in a worse position! Jackson stays on the mat for a second longer, trying to goad Webb back down to him, but Cody Grant eventually steps in and stands Jackson up. Webb swings a low kick that misses, but Jackson’s counter one-two combo is blocked when he moves in. It was mostly to get Webb’s attention, though, as he drops for a double leg takedown that plants Jackson back on the mat, albeit only as far as the guard. There’s a brief struggle as Webb tries to free himself from Jackson’s control, but JAckson’s able to eventually break Webb’s guard and pass all the way back to side mount! Webb scrambles to recover his half-guard, but Jackson slides his leg through and ends up in full mount! Again, Webb scrambles his way back to half-guard, but Jackson’s just as quickly able to re-establish mount--and so the struggle goes, counter for counter, until Webb doesn’t just stop at half-guard. He manages to get all the way back to his full guard, and clamps down on Jackson to try to stall him out. Jackson’s trapped for a second, but eventually gets his posture up, breaks Webb’s guard, and passes back to side mount once again! Jackson’s movement on the ground is really impressive to me, but apparently it’s not enough to impress Cody Grant, who stands the two men up. Jackson stings Webb with a low leg kick, but his follow up punches get blocked and countered with some big shots that Jackson has to get his guard up to block. Webb coaxes Jackson in, then leaps for a flying knee that KNOCKS JACKSON’S MOUTHPIECE OUT! How Jackson recovers, I have no idea, but not only does he, but he finishes the round with an ankle trip takedown! The horn sounds before he can do anything with it, but wow, what a recovery.

Kayla Chapman’s Scorecard (Unofficial): 10-9 Jackson (19-19 through 2 Rounds). Pretty straightforward. Bar the flying knee there at the end, he dominated the round. Although we’ve seen a couple 10-8s that had no business being 10-8s, so...you know, don’t be surprised if that flying knee won Webb the round on the official scores.

ROUND 3: Webb starts round 3 by digging his punches to Jackson’s body, but Jackson’s able to get his guard down to block them and counter with a stinging leg kick, that Webb only just manages to check. Webb throws a big left hook that misses and leaves him wide open, and Jackson touches him up with a big 3 punch combination! Webb starts to throw back, but Jackson gets the better of the exchange. Webb throws a front kick to the body, but Jackson deflects it, then manages to avoid a looping left hand from Webb. As Webb commits to the attack, Jackson drops for a single leg takedown, and eventually drags him down, passing all the way to side mount once again! Jackson slams Webb’s ribs with a few elbows before trying to pass to mount, but Webb’s able to recover his half-guard, only to eat a THUNDEROUS shot to the face! Webb’s stunned, and Jackson uses that to pass all the way to mount! Jackson drops some major elbows down on Webb--one, two, three land, and Cody Grant’s warning Webb to defend or he’ll have to stop the fight! Webb tries to roll to his side, trying to re-establish his guard, but Jackson moves with him and ultimately takes his back! Jackson slams his heel into Webb’s ribs, trying to get him to open up for a potential choke, but Webb’s able to roll back to his back, ultimately ending up in half-guard. The fight slows considerably, and Cody Grant stands the two men back up. Webb wings a big overhand right on the restart, which Jackson avoids and counters with a stiff right hand, followed by a looping hook that rolls Webb’s eyes back in his head and drops him to the mat! Before Jackson can do any more damage, Cody Grant jumps in and waves the fight off--the right call, even though Webb seems confused by the stoppage.

Kayla Chapman’s Opinion: I’d be curious what the scorecards are for this fight; after some of the judging tonight, we could’ve been headed for anything from a 30-27 to Jackson, to a draw, to 29-28 Webb. Luckily, we don’t have to worry about it! Let’s start with Derrius Webb--when he landed, he looked like he was doing major damage. There were a couple shots that...I think D’ante Jackson had divine intervention keeping him on his feet. Derrius needs to tighten up his hands, though; if he could’ve landed some of those big punches, he might’ve been able to finish the fight in the first. Credit to Jackson for the recovery, though. He toughed out a brutal first round to utterly dominate the second and third. Slick takedowns, impressive boxing, and thunderous ground and pound, this is a Welterweight to watch this season.
