BROOKLYN — During the media scrum at the eMMA // Brooklyn weigh-ins Friday night, I managed to wedge my way into speaking with “Spyda” Derrius Webb, one-half of the main event fight, for a brief moment. Below is the transcript of my time spent with Webb.
ISAAC COHEN
Thank you Derrius for taking some time out of your day to answer a few questions. First off, big main event fight this weekend, facing Rio Khaill in which you both are 2-1 and on the fringe of a title fight. Given that you fought for the inaugural title, do you feel like a win over Khaill puts you right back in front of the line, or do you think you’ll need a win or two to get that call?
DERRIUS WEBB
I’ma be honest with you bo, I ain’t even worried bout bein next in line for another championship fight. I’m only three steps into this dance. My focus is improvin out there, landin punches and not missin eight hundred of em like last time. If a title opportunity come then it come. All I can control is what I do in that cage, bo.
ISAAC COHEN
How big is it that you are main eventing in your hometown Brooklyn?
DERRIUS WEBB
I been lookin forward to seeing the faces of everybody there that doubted me growin up. My fam moved down to ATL when I was still a kid. It ain’t many of us but we all we got, ya know? Brooklyn is what it is but my heart always gon be in ATL where the fam at. I can promise you one thing bo, I’ma fuck the shit out of Brooklyn when I’m up in it.
ISAAC COHEN
You made a big splash in your debut, knocking out Josh Thompson in a roundabout forty seconds; then picked apart Kelvin Taylor in the semifinals with those nasty leg kicks. But in the finals, you fell to Lovelie Saint-Cyr in a lopsided fight, no disrespect to you. Did LSC come into that fight with something you weren’t expecting, or was this someone you had maybe overlooked given the fact you were coming in with two impressive victories? If you could, give us some details as to how the training camp went and what the game plan was coming into that title fight.

DERRIUS WEBB
We trained like I been trained both fights before. Good ol Uncle Ruckus and the crew beat the dog shit out of me every step of the way. I’ma a striker, I been learnin from one of the best. Physically I was there but mentally? I was like a deer in the headlights and froze up. Lovey brought that shit straight up no denyin it. I wish I could have another go at it but we don’t get redos in this game.
ISAAC COHEN
You train at Real Killas, and It’s no secret that you’ve been taken under the wing of the two-time Union GP Cruiserweight Champion Roscoe Robinson. What’s it like to train and share the facilities with the likes of The Shooter, Daniel Fisk, Robert Guilliman, and so many others top tier fighters?
DERRIUS WEBB
It’s definitely a learning experience. Scoe been like a older brother to me most my life. But seein him workin with the others open up my eyes a lot to this sport. It ain’t the same back alley fights I grew up doin. This the big time, big competition. If I’ma make in this game what I learn from everyone at Real Killas is gon help tremendously. That’s on god.
ISAAC COHEN
It’s been noted that LSC has been spending more time at the RK facilities, but is still listed as a Red Rock Fighting product. Officially, you are the lone RK Welterweight in Everest, how important is that to you to carry the flag in what is arguably becoming the most exciting division?
DERRIUS WEBB
I’ma always represent no doubt. I ain’t got one toe in the pool bo I’m all in. Killas put a lot of faith in me and I’ma earn mines, show em they made the right decision with me, I’m a soldier.
ISAAC COHEN
Now, let’s say you secure the win over Rio Khaill, but you don’t get the call for the next title fight. Is there anyone out there you would like to face?
DERRIUS WEBB
It don’t matter who it is, bo. A opp is a opp and if you standin across from me in that cage that’s how it be. I ain’t picky.
ISAAC COHEN
Well Derrius, I appreciate the time spent with you, is there anything you’d like to add before I let you go?
DERRIUS WEBB
We straight. Appreciate the opportunity to sit down with ya. Saturday night is a big test for me. I gotta bounce back and get on course and it all starts in Brooklyn. I don’t need no glasses. I’ma come correct and do what I do and If I win? I’ma be partyin deep in Brooklyn until she screamin my name in tongues.
ISAAC COHEN
Thank you, Derrius. I’ll be looking forward to seeing your fight this weekend.
